Stop Being the Idea Guy and Just Do It!

Luminous Idea

I can’t think of too many people I would less like to be around than the “idea guy” or the “I thought of that guy.” And two of my favorite blogs have called them out.

I have nothing to add. I’ll just point you to them:

37Signals: There’s no room for the Idea Guy

Startups need people able and willing of doing the actual work. They need programmers, designers, and eventually folks to do marketing, support, and more. What they don’t need, though, is someone who’s just going to be The Idea Guy.

Chris Brogan: I could Totally Do That

Someone else took your idea. You’ve been talking about it for years. That’s your thing. I can’t believe she said what I’ve been saying for years, and now she’s got a book. I could totally do that.

So, what are you going to do today?

    Dear God Yes Bill!

Unfortunately I'm an idea guy that is aspiring to become MORE of an idea-to-implementation guy. We totally faced this in our company about 1.5 years ago – where more and more and more things became making their way onto the “wouldn't that be cool if” pile.

We realized that innovation without implementation was just stupid – and that more and more of our projects were being rolled out half-baked so that we could move onto the next.

Today, all of our projects – tech, marketing, etc. – are scrutinized and prioritized to truly understand the cost of implementation. There are a number of really-fricking-cool things that have made it nearer the bottom of the pile, but, we're knocking projects out now – and doing them well.

Great point and way to start my Friday – I'm off to a budgetary IT planning meeting (don't envy me… just don't…)

    Matt,

Thanks for the comment. That was my reaction too, when I saw these. I new everyone in the Better Closer needed to see them too.

    Happy Friday!

Wow, this is a great reminder!! And I think of the concept of “analysis paralysis” too…and how when we keep analyzing something, without actually getting out there and doing something….we paralyze that idea. Perhaps there's this thought of “I might fail”. Still, though, if we never “do”, we'll never know. And that thought right there is definitely letting our ideas fail…when we never do give them wings….
