Look Beyond Yourself for Success.

by Bill Rice on January 11, 2010

Look BeyondI think all the self-help books have a fundamental flaw. Most ask people to look in the wrong direction for success. In fact, they may even have us looking in a dangerous direction.

How often have you heard:

“Look deep inside,” “Start with the Man in the Mirror,” “Look to yourself.”

I submit that the real key to success, the true magic in rising to higher levels is looking beyond yourself.

Sure you have to drive yourself to take action and get a little uncomfortable. However, the best way to do that is to do it for someone else.

Take today and find someone else to help. You will be more successful for it.

Bill – I like your thought. I would add to it one thing that has helped me immensely -

“Look outside your INDUSTRY for success” – I bet you dollars to donuts that there are smarter people out there outside of your industry that can help you achieve your goals, are more innovative, etc.

Perfect timing for me to see this. I had made all these plans for myself for today, and this morning remembered I have a client meeting to review their site. I want to help my clients but I was putting a lot of pressure on myself for my tasks. I think I can take a deep breath and remember that helping my clients goes a long way toward my own success. Thanks!

Nicely done, Bill. Looking for someone to help is a great way to get moving, and an effective way to focus on priorities. It seems like a no-brainer when you stop and think about it: where would any of us be without clients?

I also find that the advice I give others is much more coherent than my self-talk — except for times that I recognize that the solution / advice I am giving would solve an issue I am also dealing with lol. Very good recommendation.

Looking beyond yourself…for the good of someone else. Yes Bill, this is the stuff that builds the will for conviction and confidence in action. In sales, and in life. Nice insight. @juanlulli

Bruce,

Very good point. I often feel I learn much more when I try to teach or present it to someone else. It forces you to be better prepared, more coherent, and helps you retain the skill. Excellent.

Juan, Thanks for the comment. I like your point about confidence. That's another big reward.

You've given me a different approach in perceiving success. I will ponder on this. :-)

I love this article.
In the end it only matters how you treat others.
